So this is pretty cool. Ben Sollee, a guy I knew back in middle school, is now making some awesome cello folk music. I love finding new artists and to find one that I actually have a personal connection to (ok, so he was a couple grades ahead of me but everyone at Winburn knew he was pretty much amazing and he was always friendly) is just awesome. I wish the best for this guy. Check out his Myspace http://myspace.com/bensollee he's got some killer folk music, not too much twang, just good soul-filled make-you-breathe-deep tunes. He was on NPR too. Yay!

In other news, I've been spending the summer waiting tables at a little mexican restaurant in lexington and I now have a new found appreciation of 1) waiters and 2) mexican cuisine. It's hard work, but I've been lucky to meet some really great people and have had a fun time saving up for the move.

Speaking of which, I'll be moving to Louisville to start the Actors Theatre Acting Apprentice program in about a week and a half. If you'd like to come visit and see a show sometime in the next 9 months give me a call! I'm super psyched.

Finally, in a continuation of the random tangent, I went to the beach and learned how to surf this past week. I love the beach! Surfing is freeing and a LOT of fun. And it makes you damn tired. So now I'm going to find some aloe for my poor sun-abused body and get some sleep to recover for another double shift tomorrow!

Wishing you all the best!

May. 13th, 2008 @ 10:09 pm ramble on, sing that song
So I graduate in under a week. I consider this to be a good thing, although there are certainly things that I am going to miss about Centre. A lot has happened since my last update. Romeo and Juliet went off amazingly and I was really proud of the work we did. My senior project didn't, but that's ok - I took a risk and that's a good thing. I'll be assistant directing The Merry Wives of Windsor this summer and then heading to join the Actors Theatre of Louisville Acting Apprentice Company this fall. I got the acting award from the department. I turned down a great directing internship at Hangar Theatre because of money, timing, and stress, but I'm going to be in Lexington this summer so I can save up some money, assistant direct, and visit with high school friends, which is great! I got a new computer as a graduation present too, which never hurts. There have been some tough times this semester, but the good overwhelmingly surpasses the bad. I think I'm happy, which hasn't always been true, and that says a lot.

Feb. 10th, 2008 @ 11:08 pm So here's another life update...
Life since the New Year has been going relatively well. Centre Term was relaxing. I took Mathew's musical theatre course and tried to keep myself from committing to too much else. On a down note, my Grandmother landed in the hospital, and she was making progress, but just relapsed. It's still all up in the air.

Other than that, things are looking up. I've got the musical coming up at the beginning of April (playing Orin - the Dentist - in Little Shop), and I just finished casting Romeo and Juliet today. I'm pretty pumped about both shows. UK seems to have turned their early season woes around somewhat, and I was able to scream my lungs out at the UT game in January, a pretty special experience (especially seeing as the tickets I lucked into were one row down and five seats over from the season tickets my Dad owns - ridiculous chance). But Rupp was Rockin'! It was awesome. What else is good?

Over the break I got down to see my old high school's musical (ironically, "High School Musical") and it was pretty high school, but always fun. It's good to go back and see alum and where the theatre department is headed. Trish is looking at retiring at the end of the year, and they'll miss her a lot, but times change, and I think Dunbar Drama will continue to be a great experience for those involved, just a different one without the drama mama.

This past weekend I made it down to the Unified Professional Theatre Auditions in Memphis. 6 1/2 hour drive each way, which meant a lot of time alone in the car, but I was able to catch the UK-Bama game on the way back, and also catch up on listening to some music. The Christmas I-Pod was certainly a welcome travel companion, although I don't think I'll ever get tired of classic rock radio stations. But enough about the drive. The auditions went well. I received callbacks, (and a dance callback on which I'm just thankful not to have totally embarrassed myself) and a few of them went excellently; now it's just a waiting game - with a little help through friendly email contact, perhaps :) I was also able to see Jen from Berkshire and met her friend Chrissy, so the friendly faces were welcome, and made the whole trip a lot more enjoyable.

Now it's back to the grind. I'm 22, and a graduating senior. Damn. How did that happen? Classes are going well, and seminar is interesting, but I'm at that point where all the other classes are secondary to what I want to be doing. I'm looking forward, and it's pretty scary, and sometimes I freak out in my head, but there's some part of me that says GO. Make it happen. And I think that's what college has been good for.

Jan. 1st, 2008 @ 07:25 pm Another beginning, and end of year wrap up
Winter break is almost over, welcome 2008. It's snowing substantially here in Lexington for the first time this winter. I've just spent vacation vacating - cleaning out my room from the papers that accumulated over the past four years, and cleaning out my mind by doing almost nothing related to next semester. Recharging the batteries as it were. But the breaks been great and I'm about ready to speed back into the thick of things. I wanted to do another year update (same questions as last year) for myself and any of you who are interested and still occasionally read this, so here we go...

tonight i am in Lexington at my house but it feels like i don't live here anymore. I haven't spent a night at home in almost four months. I think each year I spend less and less time here. That's a part of growing up I suppose, but it's also kind of depressing. I can feel the distance.

Today I fixed Outlook Express on my laptop, which has been broken and bugging me for a helluva long time (a year?). It took maybe an hour to figure out and then about 5 minutes to fix. That's ridiculous. Technology is sometimes ridiculous.

The summer at BTF is going amazingly well. The pace of life at Berkshire is totally different than Centre, and so is the energy. More relaxed; many more positive vibes - coincidence? probably not :)But that doesn't mean I haven't been busy, just that it feels a lot different. As apprenti (not a real word, but how we are often referred to) we're taking classes in contemporary scenes (I'm working on Dan/Alice from "Closer" and Treplev/Arkadina from "The Seagull"), Shakespeare (Orsino/Viola "Twelfth Night"), Linklater voice, master classes with visiting artists, and then of course duties like Car Parking and working concessions. I've been given the opportunity to give curtain speeches, which is exciting, and we just got done with our first changeover this past weekend. It's been great to get to know the people here, and while it's hardly been a month I feel like we're all incredibly close. Rehearsals for "Aesop's Network" begin this Wednesday, so that's another thing to look forward to, and there's still two months of the summer left! Happy July! I hope everyone is doing well. Let me know what you are up to!

so it's 4am and i can't sleep. my sleep schedule is messed up and i'm having more trouble righting it than ever before. blah! i can't stop think about berkshire, about directing the opera and romeo and juliet once i get back to school, about how awesome having daniel stein is going to be, and such and such. it kind of freaks me out. but i'll put a good face on it and move forward with confidence - is that a good thing? the last time i moved forward with such confidence was backstage at the dance recital when i busted my knee. whoops. that was about a month ago and it still swells under heat but otherwise has made a full recovery. i'm hopeful. summer break has been slow. brought out one of the old RPGs "Arcanum" and played that up for awhile until it got buggy and crashed. blah again. and I've been ordering books and doing a lot of reading. mostly theatre things on suzuki, on directing, and on the power of myth. yay. still need to start that last one... i leave for thirteen weeks starting this saturday. that's the longest i've been away from home since london! hopefully it will be equally inspiring. umm, grades came out and were fine, so that's good. i went to the eye doctor - i think i'm going to need reading glasses, but not yet, maybe when school starts. i can't think of much else. the unicycle video seems to be popular on youtube. facebook has gone crazy with applications. alright now i'm commenting on the general know. i need to stop and try to sleep again. why does everyone seem so jaded? or is that just lj bringing out the best in us? i found out today that a good friend of mine from middle/high school just had a baby. i can't even imagine. but she seems happy so i'm glad for her. are we really at an age old enough to have kids? yikes. alright. tobedmego.

Arthur paper = done
Video project = done

$25 parking ticket

but junior senior dinner was tonight. a nice thing to do although not real eventful. except for a drunken pkm which is sometimes amusing.

of course, like most centre students, i should be writing papers at this moment.
but i won't bore you with that.

i'm compiling a list of "get pumped" music for my final video project on unicycle jousting (a 7 minute documentary). they are some fun songs so i just thought i'd share, and see if anyone had any other suggestions...

Heavy(-er) "get pumped" list:
System Of A Down - Toxicity
Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name
Godsmack - Bad Religion
Metallica - For Whom the Bell Tolls
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Static-X - Push It
System Of A Down - Aerials

Light "get pumped" list
Cake - The Distance
Survivor - Eye of the Tiger
Sex Pistols - God Save The Queen
Ramones - Blitzkrieg Bop
Queen - Another One Bites The Dust
Theme from 2001: A Space Odyssey
Queen - We Will Rock You

Other than that, I've finished up acting in "Fair Maid", the lights for "Fat Pig", the Centre Singers Concert, and soon will be done with dance and guitar. I head to the Berkshires at the beginning of June. And London people get back soon, which is exciting. Senior Seminar presentations this week (gah! that's me next year) and hunkering down for finals. But I'm alive and can't complain. out.

The Humana Festival Podcasts are awesome. There's 10 from interviews with playwrights to resident designers! http://actorstheatre.podomatic.com/?badge=1 They are mostly about 3-4 minutes long. I'm a fan.

I miss Spring Break from freshman year. A week at a chateaux in the smoky mountains sure as hell beat sitting around my house in Lexington, KY. But this break hasn't been a total waste. I got down to see "Strike-Slip" and "The As If Body Loop" last Saturday at the Humana Festival, and I'm heading down to see "Batch" tomorrow with some Centre people so that should be fun. I was thinking the other day that I've seen 22 shows I can remember since my return from London, which while it doesn't quite match the frantic pace I put up there, still makes me feel good that I'm seeking out theatre more than I did before the trip.

The further I get away from London the more I realize the effect it had on me. I guess that is true of every significant life experience. I'm putting my application in to the Berkshire Theatre Fesival tomorrow for their acting apprenticeship this summer and I'm hoping it will the next in that list. I had to write an essay as a part of my application and it really made me think. I love this work and I want that chance so bad. I hope they see that.

The emails from friends in London send tremors of nostalgia through me. I'm moved to make it back at some point. I wasn't when I first came back, I was too excited to go try out new ideas, but a year later I want to go back and be inspired like that again. It's weird. Watching "Slip-Strike" I was reminded so strongly of Tanika Gupta's "Gladiator Games" which I saw in the fringe. The set strikingly similar and the intense forward moving energy through the first half. It just felt right.

Other than that: SETC went well - I directed in the 24 hour 10min play festival, auditioned and got called back. I'll be in the theatre this summer doing something. That's encouraging. I turned 21. I'm in a play at Centre. I've got to memorize the lines. I need to read more about both southern lit and King Arthur for classes. i like the dig vid class. got a family portrait taken today. and i'm mostly alone and content, if not perfectly happy about it. wish i had something deeper than that, but that's what i got at the moment.

So Good News! My first paid lighting design went up this evening! Rogers and Hammerstein's "Cinderella" yay. Derrick was a great help too (and took some photos for my portfolio) double yay. The only downside is I lost my Centre Term break - but it was totally worth it.

In other news my car was fixed by the people under warranty so it no longer makes hideous racketing noises and I didn't have to pay  to get it fixed. triple yay.

birthday's friday.
